Niche Marketing At Its Best, Over $100,000.00 worth of tools and software, Its your Own Crystal Ball Into the Future of Online Money.

Making Money online is one of those Really difficult things to actually achieve, Well that’s how I found it any way. I really struggled with targeting the right money searches, let alone trying to find niches to work in. Prepare to open your mind, you can make a lot of money just selling How to Draw A Car E-book, no kidding!

PROVEN Affiliate Formulas Ive Used To Generate Extra Cash

After completing the original Commission Blue print Course, which I have to say was really cheap for what you could achieve from it, “I think it was about $90.00 “, anyway using their research methods and strategies I picked a hole In the weight loss Niche, I know its real competitive but there are Sub Niche marketing Channels with in Niche Market and that’s what I focused on and it worked, 10+ Sales a Day @ 38 USD lets work it out 70+ Sale a week that’s 280+ Sale Per month = 10,000.00 USD Per Month and it was great it lasted for 2 months, that’s right this really does work. I followed the course which was easy well, there is always a technical side to deal with the support was there so it did not really matter…

See below Shock Horror

The Game Has Changed – AGAIN!…

Then Along Came Google with a New algorithm and my income stopped… Things changed hard and fast, Google took a stance against affiliate marketers and started to unroll some new filters to all Google Adwords accounts, I can tell you there would have been tears!. These filters are in place now and affiliate marketing just got harder well Until that is Commission Blue Print 2.0 came along and taught me the New Rules I bought the course, I like these Guys they are for real and on to it hey, sure there are systems to follow but do as they say and you will get there. The New Tools are insane they scrape the web and Google for data and bring it all into one place Sometimes I laugh as its Just time in front of a computer and for me that’s Cool as its in My own home, the other Day I was putting up the tent in the back Yard and made over 100 USD during that time, my advertising costs where 10 USD 90 USD a Day is 32,000.00 A year…

It’s So Important That You Are Here...

I actually now have no real time earthly Job, Who wants to join that club, if you are smart then you Wont want a job either Hey some days I make nothing But Most days I do. Check out the results below

Ok the benefits of becoming a successful affiliate marketer are unreal. You can do what you like, when you like (as long as it’s legal of course … and the most liberating thing about it is that you can run your business from anywhere in the world…

The Commission Blueprint 2.0 course really has me excited & Motivated again!. I have to say after having the Google carpet pulled from under me I was a little hesitant on affiliate marketing But, as the Commission Blue Print Team say, less competition is always good actually with latest clean out of affiliates Id say there has never been a better time to enter the Game.

This may not seem a brag-gable amount but, its bloody working I have Sold $642.53 USD worth of products in Days see below my New click bank account income its a beautiful thing and I now Know how to work on it now to make it increase, As Tim Would Say Follow the system and Rinse and Repeat .

I will post my New Sales Over the Next few Days or when there are Changes

The .PSD file is the greatest tool and resource to any web designer. Sure, you could create a design from scratch, coding by hand with no help from The trusted and handy photoshop… and that’s even how I started… but I bet once you get the chance to learn the tips and tricks that I will point out

In this article, you will wonder how NOT using .PSD’s for your design is even possible.

<?php adsensem_ad('post-ad'); ?>

Here is the sample design we are going to make:

You can download the Website Layout psd: Download psd Weblayout

First things first. Open your version of photoshop (I’m using CS3 here but CS2 is perfectly fine). Now to begin, lets first do something of personal Preference. This isn’t necessary but it may help you with the layout and arrangement of photoshops tools and menus… by changing your “Workspace.”

Photoshop to mock a website

You can download the Website Layout psd: Download psd Weblayout

To do this, go to : Window -> Workspace and select “Web Design.” Now you see the Adobe Teams idea of a Photoshop workspace for Web Designers. It highlights Important menu items and arranges the tools that most web designers will use.

Now lets begin to create a layout, in which later you will code into CSS and XHTML.

In CS3 (and CS2 I believe) you can select resolution presets for the web. So hit CTRL + N to open a new document. Under “preset” select “Web.”

Now select “1024 x 768.” I choose that over 800 x 600 because the majority of visitors will be seeing your webpage in that resolution- you can

Code it to shrink to an 800 width later on.

Now with your document open in 1024 x 768, we are going to begin the creative process. We will start from the top down. So begin with the header.

Start a new layer (ctrl + shift + N). Select your marquee tool (M) and draw a region from the top left to the top right with the height of about 85px… or whatever You think looks nice.

Now fill in that layer with any color you prefer. To make this look more modern and trendy you can fill it in with a gradient. Try one of the “Web 2.0 Gradients”

On this website. To do this, right clik the layer and select ‘Blending Options’ then on the left side menu select ‘Gradient.’ You can choose which gradient You feel works for a header. Sample them all.

Once the header block is complete, create a new layer again (ctrl + shift + N) and, just under the header block, use your marquee tool (M) to create a new block For your navigation. Try a height around 30 – 35px. Then, repeat the steps above- filling in the color and selecting a gradient.

Now this is a good time to mention organization of .PSD files. In photoshop you have the option of creating folders for sets of layers or elements. To do this, find the small folder icon under the layers palette at the bottom right of of the photoshop window. Name these folders (and color code them if desired) with

a description of the type of elements they will contain, such as “header” or “navigation.” Then drag those layers into the corresponding folders.

This will keep you from having to scroll through the entire layer pallete to find that one layer that needs adjustments. It is also good for moving entire blocks Of layers and for hiding them temporarily.

Moving on with the design we are now going to draw a simple css box with an image. In the .PSD or screenshot above you will see this used as an “intro box.” Most websites or blogs use these to introduce the readers to their website or to update readers with important news and info.

So create a new layer (and folder if you are an organization freak like I am) and draw using your marquee tool the selected width/height and position Of the intro box. Now fill it in with your desired color. Once complete, right click the layer and go to ‘Blending Options.’ Find and click the ‘Stroke’ Option. Turn down the size of the stroke to 1px and change the color to something in the same color range as the background of this box- darker works Better.

For the image its just a matter of copy + paste into the right position.

Do the same for the sidebar. This is called “blocking out a design.” This will help you when coding the design. Also fill in a headline and mock up post under that.

This is just a sample and of course you can adjust and optimize this more and more… the real reason for this article is to go over those basics above and more importantly, Show you how to take a design and turn it into a working webpage with CSS and XHTML… WITHOUT “slicing.” I’m not a fan of slicing- and it’s pretty obvious why… simply Using your marquee tool with the layers makes much more sense.

Now go onto your webserver and set up a directory to test this out. I use the backend of wordpress to code almost everything since it is so versatile but You can use notepad/textpad or any text editor you feel comfortable with (if you’re really hardcore use ‘vi’).

Now how do we code this? Simple really. Like I said, all you need is your marquee tool and every element in its own layer in photoshop. So now with your

Text editor open lets make the header you mocked up above.

Select the height of your header to the exact pixel with your marquee tool. Select edit and “Copy Merged.” Now hit ctrl + n for a new image. Paste the background

Of the header that should be in your clipboard right now. Most likely your pasted image is a bit too wide. Lets select the entire image (ctrl + click the layer) and zoom In a couple times. Now using your arrow keys, hit left as many times until you cant see the blinking outline of the marquee tool- then hit your right arrow once.

Now you should just barely see it. Crop it. What you just did is select only 1px width of the hearder background image. You wont need any more then this- css Will do the rest.

Now save and/or upload this image to your webserver (you can do this locally first). Go back to your text editor.

The blank text document in your editor will be the .css sheet so lets save it as “style.css”. Open it back up and lets start the coding. Oh and by the way- keep That header background image open in photoshop.

Now first your going to want to do the basics of your css file like body { background:#FFF; } or anything else you may want to do- for this example it’s not necessary So lets skip it.

Create a css element called “#header” like so:

#header {

}

Now maximize photoshop again, and with that head background image open, select “Image” and then “Image Size” – take note of the height.

Use that height in the #header css element like so:

#header {

Width:100%; height:115px;

}

Also set the width to 100%. Now lets put in that background image and repeat it across the width of the page:

#header {

Width:100%; height:115px;

Background:url(img/header_bg.gif) repeat-x;

}

Save that and open another text document for our .html page. Save it as index.html when you are finished. In the index.html file set up your basic html tags:

<html>

<head><title>My Design</title></head>

<body>

Now add this division tag under that:

<div id=”header”>

</div>

Save and open index.html in your web browser to view the changes.

Notice you have the header…. Why that was easy wasn’t it?

Do the same for the nav… put the division (i.e.: <div id=”nav”></div>) right under the header nav. Repeat these steps until each box is on your webpage… And really you could close this article right now as you’ve learned how simple it is to make a web page using photoshop and css xhtml by just repeating these steps.

Next you’re going to want to learn about margins and padding, positions, floats and so on. Don’t worry- its not at all difficult. Practice this for awhile.

Try to create the .PSD you downloaded into a whole web-page… can you do it? Show us! Post it in the comments if you think you have the right skills… If not, don’t worry- repeat these steps with each element and you’ll get it sooner or later.

Next time we will go even further…

How to Wrap text around an Image on a website page Using CSS & HTML

I have Found this to be very useful when using images and content text together and have Included a small summary on the CSS FLOAT TAG so you can understand whats going on below is the free download.

Free website Template Complete Download

So You may think that HTML allows us to use the align attribute to get around this text and image issue and you would be correct to a degree, How ever this attribute is now deprecated, cast to the heap of redundant code but please don’t worry just now there is a way if you use the following Transitional Doctype you can get away with it. Below I have included all code HTML CSS

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"><html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

If you use the strict doctype version you will have to learn CSS AND HTML together,

However there is a css option. The css solution is very easy and it comes in the form of THE css FLOAT PROPERTY Style code below

CSS STYLE :float: left

Summary

By using the CSS float property you are effectively removing the floated element from the flow of the the document, So you are now floating the element with in the block level element that contains it, you can choose left, right,and center, Other
block elements will ignore the floated element as if it where not there, but other in-line elements such as content eg text
will render as if it was there, so this works great for this situation one thing we will need to be aware of is if you give
the floated element a border for instance you will see that the text element is sitting tight along side the border of the floated element this can be cured very simply with a margin-left attribute demonstrated below with code example

Example HTML With CSS Float tag float property

For the sake of this example I have included the CSS with the html normally I lke to call the CSS style sheets thru the
head with <link rel=”stylesheet” type=”text/css” href=”example.css” /> this reduces the code that google need to index the page loads faster as the file size is reduced two more very important reasons to do it

CSS STYLE :float: left

Lets Wrap it up

OK so that’s A basic Idea of how to wrap text around and image so lets apply this to a web site situation
where the above is the content filler for a typical web page I have included some head optimization such as meta tags for
description and Key words etc as you will notice I have links to external scripts this is great way to use scripts and style sheets
it save the amount of code sitting in the head giving faster page load times and gives google a great look at you Content and
keywords sooner

Web design CSS template site

This Is a great template I have included the image wrapping code as well, you will see a small bit
of Java script this is to render the current time on the users machine in a display bar situated at the top of the page
beneath the header this is great for giving your site the feel that the content is current I have also added a Javascript
image slide show <a href=”http://sunflowerlodge.co.nz”>Example</a> this renders much better in IE as it crossfades into each
new image where as Mozilla renders it abruptly but still looks good as well you can be the Judge </p>

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN""http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

So you want a sleek looking date icon for all your posts on your blog or web page do you? Well you’ve come to the right place. Below is a collection of different colors and styles you can choose from and customize. You can grab the .zip of the .PNG’s and .PSDs (separated for bandwidth reasons). You can use these however you feel fit, no limitations no real licensing. If you scroll down a little further you will see how to implement this into your wordpress blog.

How To Incorporate Into WordPress

To incorporate this into your current wordpress theme you are going to have to do a slight bit of image editing and css as well as xhtml… but don’t worry, we’ve done most of it for you!

Editing In Photoshop (if needed)

First download and unzip the archive. Then pick out your favorite color and open it in photoshop. You will now “save as…” the file into a .gif to be titled “dateicon.gif”…. why are we doing this? Because your visitors using the unholy Internet Explorer 5 or 6 cannot view semi-transparent .png’s.

When you save the gif a dialog will appear. Select the dropdown box next to “Palette” and select “Local (Selective)”. Make sure the check box next to “Transparency” is ticked (checked). Now select the “Matte” drop box and select “White.” and click OK. Now you have a IE friendly transparent .gif. Upload it into your wp-themes/YOURTHEMEHERE/images directory.

Adding the CSS/XHTML To WordPress

Log into your WordPress Admin Panel and go to “Presentation.” Now click on “Theme Editor” and select “style.css” on the right side (this is usually brought up automatically).

Add this code:

.the_date {
display:block;
text-align: center;
float:left;
font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
background: url(/images/dateicons/dateicon.) no-repeat;
width:60px;
}

.date_m {
display:block;
font-size: .9em;
margin:0;
padding:0;
font-weight: bold;
text-align:center;
}

.date_d {
display:block;
font-size:1.4em;
margin:0;
padding:0.7em 0 1.3em 0;
text-align: center;
}

(thanks david!).

Also note your images directory might be named something other then “images” and your path will differ so keep that in mind.

After you’ve added the code above, click on “Main Index Template” in your theme editor and find a line containing the following partial code:

<a href=”<?php the_permalink() ?>

You are going to add this above or before that line:

<div class=”the_date”>
<div class=”date_m”><?php the_time(‘F’) ?></div>
<div class=”date_d”><?php the_time(‘jS’) ?></div>
</div>

Now view your page and configure any changes you see fit.

And thats as far as i can take you! Enjoy. Some resources below if you are stuck…

Every start-up company and website must distinguish itself from the crowd aesthetically. The most important way of doing this is to accomplish the great feat of creating a unique logo for yourself. This is no small job and it’s importance is immense.

A logo is the key to setting you apart while keeping you from being lost in the torrents of new start-up companies. Your logo must be recognizable and distinguishable while memorable enough to a person that he or she will automatically associate that logo with your company or website. It should, more importantly, be associated with quality. You’re not just creating content, you are creating a brand. It makes no difference if your product is sports shoes or technology reviews, you are still a brand.

Let’s discuss the current trend of new internet companies and web apps today. It’s labeled as “Web 2.0″ which means many things (the “re-birth” of dotcoms, Ajax enables web apps etc. etc.), but one thing that all web 2.0 companies have in common is design. While they all are somewhat similar, each are unique in many ways. You can recognize their logo as being “web 2.0″ but you also recognize its unique real estate within the crowd of this emerging trend. We are going to take a note of these designs as we discuss techniques of creating unique logos, logotypes, and typefaces.

The Logo’s of Web 2.0

While you can’t exactly define the style of Web 2.0 there are certainly some similarities…

(Click to enlarge)
I don’t remember where i heard it said, but it was said best that the mainstream design of Web 2.0 is best accomplished by re-visiting your childhood… opening up a box of crayons and doing what comes natural. Its easily seen that the design usually consists of bright matching colors with stark contrast and a bit of detail. We have ditched the small text for big bold fonts and added more gradients and gloss than most likely needed.

The New Age of Typefaces

Typefaces are the most important feature of a logo and website. They should collaborate with the visual presentation of your content. Note that we are using the term “typeface” in place of “font”… The distinction between font and typeface is a font’s status as a discrete commodity with legal restrictions, while typeface designates a visual appearance or style not immediately reducible to any one foundry’s production or proprietary control. [Wikipedia, "Logotypes"]. As for fonts, there are many readily available to download and use for your logo if you are not willing to go down the path of creating your own. Below are some examples for download-able web 2.0 style fonts:

Delicious

Fontin Sans

FF Clanâ„¢

NewMedia

Union

JustOldFashion

The typefaces of today are bigger, bolder, and are usually high contrast. With some added brightness in color, some detail you can create a very unique and outstanding logo. Try some gradient overlays and add some gloss.

Detail Detail Detail

What do all great logos have in common? Detail. You don’t have to go overboard… in fact this is more of a practice in minimalism. One single detail in position to your typeface can really make your logo stand out. Contrast is key. Take this logo for instance:

Simple elegant typeface, detailed logo. Not too complex but care was given to each aspect.
Like i said Contrast is important. Make the difference of foreground from the background really stand out. Also, define lines. By this i mean highlight any curves you may use, bring shapes forward. I think you get the idea. Also as a side note to the logo above: it is a great logo for web use only but would you be able to scale it down? Turned into a vector graphic (and minus the gradient background) it could be a powerful logo for any use (see next paragraph).

Vector?… Raster?… Resolution???

A common question in logo creation is whether to create you logo as a vector graphic, or a raster graphic. There are multiple answers to this question. It depends on where and how you are going to use the graphic. Creating a Vector based graphic in a program like Adobe Illustrator or InkScape will usually be the better choice as it can be resized and printed always with its quality intact and without having to worry about resolution. They are also a little more daunting to create for many people, and if you are only going to use this logo on the web then using a raster based program like Adobe Photoshop is perfectly fine.

When is vector not a good choice? When your graphic contains photograph like imagery. Vector images cannot display the detail as pixel-based or raster graphics can. For logos, this is usually not a problem since most logos do not have a photograph of a house in the background and so otherwise Vector is the right way to go. The best practice for any logo is to make a Vector “master” graphic (in case you need it resized for business cards, letterheads etc.) and just save them in web style (.png/.gif) for use on your website.

Still going with raster? What about resolution? Well if you are going to create a master logo in a raster/pixel based program like Photoshop and you still plan on printing and using this logo outside of the web then it’s resolution becomes a factor. When creating an image in Photoshop (and most raster based paint programs) the default setting is 72 ppi (pixels per inch), which is perfectly fine for display on a monitor… but not on paper. When opening a new document, make sure you set the resolution to somewhere between 225 – 300 ppi. All printers are different and referring to the manual is always a good way to find exactly what ppi setting to use. Also note that the higher the ppi/dpi, the larger the file and the more memory it takes just handling the file.

The Process of Logo Creation

Don’t get frustrated if you cannot create or even think of the perfect logo right away. This usually takes some time. The best process is to first use a pencil and paper (remember those???) and draw out some sketches or ideas. Start small, start with the font/typeface then work your way to adding an icon and then throw in some detail. Sign up for an account at LogoPond and upload your work-in-progress… you will get some help and constructive criticism. Most importantly, if you get “Designers Block”… get off your computer, go outside, take a drive… do anything away from your monitor and you will see how quickly it will come to you.

Yes, i know this is a cheesy title, give me a break! Anyway, in this tutorial we are going to learn and examine the different ways of adding the “gloss” effect to your graphics and logos. This effect can be done, more or less, to just about anything. For our examples, we are going to use web buttons. We are going to try to cover a few ways you can do this effect so you can be the judge on the best (or quickest) way to do this depending on your needs and application.

Part 1: The “Easy” way

This technique is pretty straight forward and will give us a sort-of convincing “glossy” look to our buttons. Lets begin by opening up photoshop. Create a new image, any size you’d like… i tend to give myself a lot of room to work with then end up cropping my final outcome at the end. Then…

Click the “Rounded Rectangle” icon (or press the “U” key)

Create a rectangle about the size of the button you want (i used 223 x 63)

Highlight the button/shape by Ctrl + Clicking the layer

Right click the layer and go to “Blending Options” (or: Layer > Layer Style > Blending options)

Select “Gradient Overlay”

And inside the gradient overlay options, click on the gradient to create a gradient similar to the one shown below (click here to learn how to make a gradient):

Then use these options on the gradient overlay:

Ok, now you should have something like this:

For the lazy ones, you add some text or a little shape and be done with it… but wouldn’t you want to make it look good??? Well then…

Part 2: A little more convincing…

Now with what we have from above, we are going to edit and add a little to make this look a little better. Do this by going back to the gradient overlay options (layer > layer style > gradient overlay) with the buttons layer highlighted (ctrl + click the layer). We are going to change the gradient to a more conventional pattern (very easy!) by clicking back on the gradient in the ‘gradient overlay’ options menu (just like before) and we are going to spread out “stops” on opposite ends like so…

Now we should have a button like this:

To add gloss, we are going to create a new empty layer (Ctrl + Shift + N or Later > New > Layer) and name it something like “Gloss” and make sure it is above the button layer.Now on the “gloss” layer, use your selection tool (M) to select somewhere in the middle of the button like so (note: I’m not exactly in the middle):

Now with your Paint Bucket tool (G), fill it with white (#FFFFFF). After that, decrees the layers opacity to about 15 – 19% and you should have something like this:

Looks a bit better then the last one right? Well it also adds more flexibility for color. Try other gradients over your button layer to see my point. Switching colors takes no time.Does that outcome satisfy your hunger for gloss? We could end it there and be happy with it… right? Screw that, lets make it even better

Part 3: Now thats what I’m talking about…

Ok, we’ve done it a couple different ways and it looks alright, but we really want this to look “glossy” not just duo-toned… i mean people can’t be fooled that easy. Well for this last step we don’t have to do much… it’s really easy.

CTRL + Right Click your “Gloss Layer.”

With it selected, hit your “Delete” key to remove the white

Select your Gradient tool

Now… Double click on the gradient on the upper left side of your program:

Now select the gradient labeled “Foreground to Transparent.” It should be the second gradient if your using photoshops default gradients… if its not there you can load or reset your gradients to the default (save your others in their own set just incase)… this is done by clicking the little arrow on the top right of the gradient window (next to the OK button). It should look like this:

Now highlight it and click ok. Now make sure your forecolor is white (D then X). And with that layer selected (should be covering the top half of the button) you are going to click and drag with your gradient tool from the top of the selection to the bottom (which should be the middle of button).Don’t see much of a change do you? Well thats because you’re supposed to change the Gloss layer’s opacity level back to 100%… Looks better now huh? To get rid of the gradient parts surrounding your button you can either just crop it… or hold down CTRL and click the gloss layer… it should, more or less, select the overflowing top gradient… then delete that part and you should have something like this:

I think that looks like a glossy button huh?Now that you have mastered the art of the gloss… you can spruce up your button (or whatever you used during this tutorial). For the button, Add some text and an icon… try adding a stroke to it (Blending Options -> Stroke). Try different shapes, like un-rounded. I like to cut out a bit of the button on the left to look like this:

Now add some different gradients to the button layer and change it up a bit…. this is just the basic tutorial and you could add even more if you fool around with it. Also, If you round the button a little more, remember you can also create a rounded like shine for the gloss by using the circle selection tool.

No, we’re not talking about the early 90′s music movement. We’re talking about the “Grunge” effect that we are all so in love with these days. In this tutorial we’re going to discuss how and where to not only use the grunge effect but also learn how to make our own grunge brushes for re-use in all of our projects.

Lets start by showing you what grunge is typically used for in graphic design:

Before:After:Note: Click to enlarge

This effect is very easy to do. Infact, it took me all of about 3 minutes to do using brushes. Sure, there are a lot of grunge brushes out there to for free download and use, but creating organic graphics is by far the best practice. So, we are going to first learn how to make our own Grunge Brushes. So lets begin!First off, you’re going to need to find a texture from a photo you own, or one on the web. If you are gung-ho about doing this without using anything from the internet then i suggest taking your digital camera and taking photos of sides of buildings and concrete… the dirtier the better. If you dont have the time or are just lazy, finding photos to use online is simple and easy (and we’re not going to copy them so it’s okay). Try some of these sites:

Mayang’s Free Texture Library

TextureKing

Texture Library

Texture Warehouse

Pick one with a lot of dirt or corrosion. Now we are going to have to adjust the image most likely to get rid of some color and bring out the “grunge” in it. Follow these steps….

Open up the image photoshop:

Go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate (or: Ctrl + Shift + U). Depending on the outcome, you probably have to adjust the levels by going to
Image > Adjustments > Levels (or: Ctrl + L). You’re going to want something more or less like this:

Now with the image desaturated and the levels adjusted your going to single out the part(s) of the image you want to make into a grunge brush. You can use any variation of your selection tools from circle to lasso. Once you’ve roughly gotten the part you want, copy and paste into a new image. Now with your new image your going to clean up the corners so that the grunge spot is smooth with no squares cut out of it. You can do this by either by using the Eraser tool (E), and smoothing out the edges or just filling in the spots with white. Note that this step is sometimes not needed… and easy way is to just fill out parts with the paint bucket to white and you will probably get rid of a lot of jagged edges from your selecting.Anyway, you should have something more or less along the lines of this:

Now with that, your going to make it into a brush. First off, if your going to make this in your own set or redistribute it on the internet then your going to have to take a few small steps before adding this as a brush…

Go to Edit > Preset Manager

Highlight Brushes in the drop down menu

Hit Ctrl + A to select all

Select ‘Delete’ (This WILL NOT permanently delete any brushes!)

Close the Preset Manager

Now we have a blank slate to add our brushes and make them into a set. Now with your grunge selected, go to Edit > Define Brush Preset. Now name it whatever you like and click ok. Thats it! You have your first grunge brush. Repeat this as many times with different selections to create a whole set. When your done however, make sure you open up your brushes and save them to their own .ABR file. You can do this by going back to the preset manager (Edit > Preset Manager) and highlighting them all and clicking ‘Save Set…’

Easy enough huh? Now open up your favorite piece (or make a new one) and start adding grunge. You can either go around the edges or add it everywhere to your photo. But wait! Theres a lot more you can do with it!

Heres a couple ways grunge can be used other then dirtying up that picture of your cat.

One cool effect of grunge is to add a sense of ‘decay’ to a picture or more specifically a picture of a persons face. This is accomplished by either finding a photo online (search for “dry dirt”) and simply “overlaying” it on top of the photo. This is done by by opening up the original photo, then pasting the texture on top of that layer and selecting the “overlay” option on the layer. Then using the eraser tool to go around the persons face… chances are you have something eerie. Just tweak it over and over till you have it right… thats all you have to do, you should get something like this.

Another thing is to single out one part of an image with surrounding grunge and effects. Similar to this.

There are a lot of cool things you can do with grunge… my best advice is to just practice.

In this article (slash) tutorial we will explore Gradients in all their glory. Simply put, a gradient consists of two or more colors gradually blended together. They are often used to add depth to dull single-color filled backgrounds as well as doing a lot of other cool things. This technique is a fundamental part of graphic design and you probably already use them often enough but in this article we challenge you to return to the basics and maybe learn some new things that gradients can do for you. Also, if you’re new to this then this should be a good place to get a good grasp of how gradients should be approached.

Note: for this tutorial we will be using the “Gradient Tool” located on photoshop’s Tools menu, or by pressing the “G” key as a shortcut. There are however, many other ways to access and create Gradients, such as through Layer > New Fill Layer.
Making Gradual Two Toned Gradients

A two colored gradient is the simplest gradient to create but is also, in my opinion, the best looking as it doesn’t add too much noise to a picture or background. They allow for easy contrast between the background and the foreground of an image, allowing you to “show off” the main part of your creation, whether it be a graphic or web page.

Remember in this article we are learning how to make better gradients. So we are going to set up some “rules” here and maybe explain a little more about how to pick the colors for gradients. I’ve seen some horrible looking gradient patterns… just look at some of the default photoshop presets and you should see my point. Any color can be made into a slick looking gradient but you have to pick a color close enough to the original to make the transition between the two colors work. Picking a bright red color to transform into a bright blue will always look bad but picking a dark colored blue to transform into a slightly lighter colored blue (see above) will always work and look nice. This is even easy to do so lets begin…

(you can skip this if you already know how to create gradients)
Start by selecting the gradient tool (click image below), or by pressing your “G” key.

Now with the gradient tool selected lets open up our gradient editor by clicking in the middle of the gradient shown in your upper left screen (click image below):

Now with the gradient editor open you can begin to create (and edit) your own gradients. You also should see some of photoshop’s default preset gradients in the box above. You can see more of them by clicking the arrow on the top left of that box or by manually loading the .GRD file.Now lets make a gradient. We will start by choosing your first color. Do this by double clicking on the first left “stop” in the gradient editor (below):

This should open up a Color Picker dialog window for you to choose your first color. Pick what you like, or use what I used, color 0284d1 (copy and paste that into the color picker textbox labeled “#”). Either way, pick one and press OK. Next, click the right stopper (opposite side) and pick your next color… whether your going lighter to darker, or darker to lighter always make sure it is similar enough to blend without clashing. This should be pretty obvious as you test out different variations. You can choose the second color i chose 046ba9 to see the slight contrast between the two… although this doesn’t have to be such a small difference, you could make the color gap even larger depending on what you have in mind for its use.

Making A Better Gradient

Well thats the basics on creating a two color gradient but like i said before, we are here to discuss making better gradients. There are so many ways to make gradients its too much to cover everything here so we’re going to stick to a certain path by going over different techniques and try and cover the grounds that way. So lets begin already.

Lets talk about color tones and ways to choose them. Lets start with an experiment. Open up the gradient editor and double click your first stop. Now select a random color, any color and copy its hexadecimal code. Now close it and click the next stop (note: make sure they are far left to far right for this), now paste its hexadecimal code to have to same exact color selected. Now click one of the textboxes labeled “H S B” “R G B” “L A B” and “C M Y K”… for example, select ‘B’ in the HSB. Now hold down shift, and press your up key about 2 – 4 times (try this with other directions and selections). Chances are you have a perfectly good looking gradient. Easy, yes, fun? not really but you get the point. Stay close to the original color while making the different tones obvious. Now that we got that out of the way lets have a little more fun with gradients.

There is all the hype going around about “Web 2.0.” It’s definition, which used to be pretty obvious is now getting a little more blurred as it grows on but we are going to use the term to describe what a lot of people call “Web 2.0 Colors.” They make for nice looking webpages and graphics that really stand out. Fortunately for us, this is a very basic concept and easy to re-create.

Lets start by using gradients in a slightly different manner. We’ll do it by creating a simple logo for a webpage. Follow these basic steps to begin…

Start a new image (file > image > new).

Select the size to be something around 380 x 170. (to give you room)

Select the Text Tool (T).

Press the “D” key to default the colors.

Now lets write a name for our logo. Call it whatever you please, i used the name of this site. Now choose a font. Almost any will do but i suggest something somewhat simple. Once this is done, rasterize your type layer by going to Layer > Rasterize.

Now we are going to make a gradient for our colors to use on our logo. Start by opening up the gradient editor. Click the first stop and choose your color, use something bright . I’m using a blue (# 0071b5) for the first color and using a darker blue (# 0284d1) for the second color.

Now place both stops in the center of the gradient (both at about 50%), see image below:

Now hold down Ctrl and click your text layer to highlight your text. With your text selected use the gradient tool (G) and drag the line slightly above the half way point of your text to create the gradient. Also you can do this by going to Layer > Layer style > Gradient Overlay. Either way It should look something similar to this….

Not very pretty yet but bare with me. Next go to Layer > Layer Style > Stroke and change the settings as followed…

Click OK to save. Now Duplicate the the layer. Hold down Ctrl and Select the new layer. Now select the gradient tool and go into the gradient editor. This time do the same type of gradient as the last but another color. I used red this time. Then do this all over again (duplicate layer etc. etc.) and make a new gradient. I used green for the third one. After this you should have a red, blue, and green text on 3 different layers. Now all you have to do is position them. You should have something kind of like this…

Note that I changed the background to black to better suit the colors. You can also add startbursts to the side or under it. Makes for a simple yet stylish Web 2.0 logo and is just one of the many things you can do with gradients.Sorry To leave you hanging here kids, but we will have to save more discussion and tutorials for next time! So just wait for Part 2 very soon.
